Port Askaig is a range of Islay Single Malts probably with origins in Caol Ila Distillery although everyone continues to be somewhat secretive about this. The northern most distillery on mainland Scotland, Pulteney Distillery was established in 1826 and when built it was only accessible by sea – barley was brought in by boat and the whisky was taken out by boat. Things have changed a bit since those early days but Old Pulteney continues to be an excellent malt [...]

Strathmill has had a relatively on/off production history which has undoubtedly affected the number of bottlings in circulation nowadays. Don’t fret however as there are still some fantastic bottlings of Strathmill scotch available to buy at a fair price. Independent bottlings aren’t always easy to find, and many whisky tasters describe the distilleries style as [...]

Strathisla whisky is often associated with the popular Blended Scotch Whisky Chivas Regal as it is one of the keynote malts in the blend. The Strathisla distillery itself has had a mixed past, but this hasn’t influenced the quality of the single malts being produced, nor the blends that they are used in.

Despite a capacity of around 200,000 gallons a year of production, there were no official bottlings during its lifetime, and most malt fans had barely heard of it until a series of stunning Rare Malt bottlings (as St. Magdalene) in the mid-to-late 1990s. The brand is now one of the highest praised lost distilleries in [...]

Springbank have refused to advance their distilling technology over the years which is certainly the reason for their mastery of the art. Springbank whisky is of excellent quality with an array of porices for every budget. In Michael Jackson’s Malt Whisky Companion he describes Rosebank whisky as the “finest example of Lowland Whisky” so before you even get a chance to delve in to a bottle you know your are on to something special. Young Rosebanks tend to be floral and aromatic; older expressions can be more robust and spicy, but [...]

Port Ellen is a versatile malt, with considerable differences of style evident between different bottlings. Some sherry-casked Port Ellen can be beautifully rich, spicy, sweet and leathery; bourbon and refill casks often show a more austere, peppery medium-weighted style. If one were to describe standard characteristics evident in Port Ellen whiskies the main one would [...]

Old Pulteney has a few distinctive features. Apart from being the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland, it is one of the very few remaining urban distilleries - sited, appropriately, in the Pulteneytown area of Wick. The distillery’s wash doesn’t have a swan neck, which if you know anything about the topic is rather quirky. Apparently this [...]

Oban is a fairly isolated distillery, perched on the western edge of the Scottish mainland at the very top of the Kintyre peninsula. It is one of the oldest still active in Scotland as it was established in 1794. The distillery also has an unusual location as it is one of a very few remaining urban [...]
